Union With The Congo
2012 Well Projects Announcement

This year we are celebrating the construction of two more well projects in the DRC. On Sunday March 25, 2012 Union UMC presented a check to UMCOR in the amount of $7,100 that will contribute the building of two wells in areas wrecked by a lack of clean drinking water. This "double" well project was made possible by some logistical factors and matching contributions by certain unrestricted UMCOR funding. With this (2012) funding, we will support well construction in two areas with a severe lack of water:

o          1 Well in Camp pensionnĂ© & Tabora. Beneficiaries: A population of approximately 5,000

o          1 Well in Base II, which is also the area where the UMC Guest House is located. Beneficiaries: This would serve approximately 8,000 people

The two proposed sites do not have any wells at present and individuals from these communities have to travel to the nearest wells, which are on average 1.5 kilometers away. In addition, people must wait for a considerable time even after reaching the wells, as they are so overcrowded.

As with all our well construction, we will also be doing comprehensive training on hygiene practices as well as establishing water committees to continue well maintenance and repair.

As with all of our outreach projects, this year's contribution to clean drinking water in the DRC was made possible by the hand of God and the generosity and compassion of this church.

2010 Kamin Projects Announced

After completion of a thorough needs assessment in the Kamina region of the DRC, UMCOR has announced the details of our latest project. This October through November of 2010 will see the construction of 2 new wells and 3 new latrines! The two wells will be constructed in the areas of Kamalondo and Quartier 64, which would enable access to safe water for approximately 5,000 people.  Additionally, the construction of 3 latrines (2 for boys and 1 for girls) in a school building that houses 2 distinct primary schools and would serve nearly 2,000 students. Construction and corresponding community awareness education activities will total $14,200.
