James Grubb grew up in Sumter, S.C., where his parents still reside. He received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Clemson University. In 1988, he began work in the electrical industry as a sales representative for a distributor and then became a marketing engineer with a large manufacturer.
In 1992, James wed the love of his life, Claire, and began the adventure of a lifetime. He was called to youth ministry in 2000 and served for five years as Director of Youth Ministries at St Matthew UMC in Greenville, S.C. During that time, he attended Erskine Theological Seminary, earning a Master of Divinity degree in May 2006.
During his final year of seminary, God began to nudge James into the pulpit. In June 2006, he was appointed to the Ruffin Circuit outside of Walterboro, S.C., the three-point charge of Bethel UMC, St John UMC, and Tabor UMC, where he served for four years. James was then ordained a Full Elder in the United Methodist Church and appointed to Pinopolis UMC. Four years later, in June 2014, James became the pastor of Union UMC in Conway, S.C.
An avid sports fan, James loves to golf, play soccer, softball and football, along with working out to maintain the temple God has provided him. You might catch he and Claire working in the yard or taking a leisurely stroll around town in the evenings.
On any given Saturday in the fall, you will definitely see both James and Claire wearing orange in support of their beloved Clemson Tigers. You might even hear James playing “Tiger Rag” on his trombone after a touchdown, reliving his college days in Tiger Band.
James and Claire feel extremely blessed to be a part the Union family and Conway community. The Grubbs look forward to living out their ministry model of "Loving God and loving people, and trying to help others come to know and love God."
They pray you will stop by Union and join us as we seek to live and love like Jesus in all we do.
